Institute for Coastal and Marine Research
Research diving at NMMU dates back to 1974, and has grown substantially since those early days (read our full history here). In addition to servicing the needs of subtidal marine research projects, the RDU now also provides diver training and contracted diving support for external projects. Should you require any information regarding either the up-coming training courses or hiring the services of the CMRI's RDU, please contact Anton Cloete (contact details in the side bar).
Research Diving Unit Apprentices Needed
The Research Diving Unit is looking for individuals to join its team as Diver Apprentices. This is a position that offers payment.
The aim of this appprenticeship is to call on all individuals interested in the physical operations of the RDU. This apprenticeship will give individuals the opportunity to gain experience with assisting on dives as a boat crew member - therefore no diving experience or qualification is needed. Once it has been established that an applicant has strong sea legs and is a good team player, formal diver training and qualification will be offered through an official Class 4 diver training programme. There will also be the opportunity to join the diving team.
Diving operations are very time-consuming and weather dependent, so the ideal candidate must be flexible with their time and available on short notice. It is also important that applicants are fit.
If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Anton Cloete.
